Very Rare 1863
Two Cent Pattern
Judd-310, PR64
1863 2C Two Cents, Judd-310, Pollock-375, Low R.7, PR64 NGC.
Design. The obverse features a bust of Washington facing right with the motto GOD AND OUR COUNTRY around and 1863 below. The reverse is the design adopted for regular-issue two cent coinage in 1864. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.
Commentary. USPatterns.com estimates fewer than six examples of Judd-310 are extant. This small number is further diminished by the impoundment of the specimen in the Smithsonian Institution. The present offering is a rare opportunity to secure this elusive pattern.
Physical Description. Bright red color and a splendid strike create outstanding eye appeal. A few flyspecks and handling marks define the grade. NGC Census: 3 in PR64, 2 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR64, 1 finer (12/08).
