Spectacular 1863 Bronze
Two Cent, Judd-312
PR67 Red and Brown
1863 2C Two Cents, Judd-312, Pollock-377, R.4, PR67 Red and
Brown NGC. Design. The obverse die showcases the heraldic shield, with arrows behind and a laurel wreath draped down both sides. A scroll with the motto GOD OUR TRUST is above, and the date below. The reverse die centers around the denomination 2 CENTS inside a wreath of wheat, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in bronze with a plain edge.
Commentary. The Mint experimented with several designs for the two cent piece in 1863. Judd-312 was struck in at least three different weight standards, and the dies were used to strike Judd-313 (copper-nickel), and Judd-314 (aluminum). It was decided that GOD OUR TRUST was not quite the perfect phrasing for the motto and another design was adopted for coinage of the two cent piece in 1864.
Physical Description. Impressively struck, with design elements that seem nearly three dimensional. Blazing, original, mint-red color with tints of pale blue create fantastic eye appeal. A nearly unimprovable example of this popular pattern. NGC Census: One in 67 Red and Brown, 1 finer as a 67 Red. PCGS Population: Only two examples of Judd-312 have graded as high as PR66 Brown (12/08).
