    Fascinating 1863 Three Cent
    Pattern In Bronze
    Judd-319, PR64 Red and Brown

    1863 3C Three Cents, Judd-319 Original, Pollock-384, R.5-6, PR64 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
The obverse die is similar to the Braided Hair large cent design, with 13 stars around Liberty's bust and the date below. The reverse displays the denomination 3 CENTS in two lines, centered in a laurel wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in bronze or copper with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Hoarding of regular coinage during the uneasy days of the Civil War led to a desperate shortage of small change in the national economy. One measure considered to alleviate the problem was to replace the precious-metal trime with a bronze three cent piece. The pieces were struck at different times and on various planchets with different weights, in order to evaluate the feasibility of such a coin. The project was abandoned when it was discovered that the public hoarded copper coins, too. The present coin weighs approximately 144 grains, indicating that it is an original issue, not a restrike.

    Physical Description.
An exceptional strike, with fine detail on all design elements. Original mint-red color remains in areas around the devices, with attractive deep blue toning on the fields. Deeper toning on the reverse, with a dark spot at 6 o'clock. NGC Census: 1 in PR64 Red and Brown, 7 finer in either Brown or Red and Brown. PCGS Population: None in PR64 Red and Brown, 3 finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Corrado Romano Collection (Stack's, 6/1987), lot 836.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29EX, PCGS# 70477)
