    1863 Three Cent Bronze Pattern
    Judd-319, PR66 Red and Brown

1863 3C Three Cents, Judd-319, Pollock-384, R.5-6, PR66 Red and Brown NGC. CAC. The obverse is similar to the Braided Hair large cent design that was discontinued seven years earlier, only with much smaller digits in the date. The reverse has a design similar to the issued 1864 two cent piece, but the wreath is smaller and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is larger. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Approximately 50-60 pieces are believed extant of this experimental striking. This piece retains considerable original mint red on each side. Only the occasional dab of blue or brown interrupts the bright mint luster, especially on the reverse. The surfaces are exceptionally well preserved and the fields are nicely mirrored. (NGC ID# 29EX, PCGS# 70476)
