1863 With Motto Copper Half Dollar
    Judd-343, PR65+ Red and Brown

1863 50C Half Dollar, Judd-343, Pollock-415, R.7, PR65+ Red and Brown NGC. Ex: Simpson. Identical in design to the proof 1866 With Motto Seated half dollar, but the date is 1863. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This so-called transitional half dollar uses the reverse of 1866-1891. These and the other "With Motto" patterns of this date, as well as 1864 and possibly 1865, are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and were offered with restrikes of other denominations in complete sets. The fields are bright and highly reflective, and the color is mostly a deep cherry-red with blue accents here and there. A lovely, problem-free Gem.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2006), lot 1828; ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2010), lot 5664.

Due completely to Heritage's thoroughly diligent and professional management and promotion of the collection, the faraday Collection stirred national attention among numismatists and the auction results brought a gross value greater than that last estimated by the experienced collector.
