1863 With Motto Half in Aluminum
    Judd-344, PR63

1863 50C Half Dollar, Judd-344, Pollock-416, High R.7, PR63 NGC. A regular issue 1863 obverse is paired with a regular issue (post-1866) With Motto reverse. Although dated 1863, this piece was likely struck in the early 1870s as part of a complete denominational set of 1863 With Motto patterns. These were probably struck at the same time as the 1864- and 1865-dated With Motto restrikes. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Each side shows russet-colored streaks. These appear to not be oxidation, but rather some problem in the production of the aluminum planchet.
