1863 'Transitional' Half Dollar, Judd-344, PR65
Struck in Aluminum, With Motto
Extremely Rare, Perhaps Five Known
1863 50C Half Dollar, Judd-344, Pollock-416, High R.7, PR65
NGC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The obverse is that of the
regular-issue Seated quarter of 1863. The reverse is also similar
in design, but a scroll with IN GOD WE TRUST appears above the
eagle, as adopted officially in 1866. Struck in aluminum with a
reeded edge. These With Motto pieces and their counterparts in
other metals are actually fantasy pieces or restrikes made several
years after 1866, perhaps into the 1870s. At least four examples
are known of the aluminum strikes, per USPatterns.com -- far rarer
than either the copper or silver counterparts to this issue. The
Queller-Lemus Collection (Heritage, 1/2009) had both the
"transitional" half dollar in copper (Judd-343) and the
"transitional" dollar in silver (Judd-345), but it lacked an
example of the Judd-344 aluminum half.Ex: Douglas Weaver, 12/21/1973; Harry W. Bass Research Foundation. Accompanied by an inventory tag showing provenance. HBCC-6054 (Bass Sylloge number).
