Very Rare 1863 Half Dime Pattern
    Judd-323, PR65 Red and Brown

    1863 H10C Half Dime, Judd-323, Pollock-388, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
Both obverse and reverse dies are the designs used on regular-issue coinage for the year. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Traditionally listed as a die-trial mintage, Judd-323 is now believed to be a restrike issue. The USPatterns.com website elaborates: "... these are actually restrikes deliberately made in the early 1870s and sold as part of complete off-metal sets with the silver coinage of this year containing quarter, half dollar, and dollar [pieces] which had the reverses of 1866 with the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' above the eagle." The hub used to produce the dies had a broken D in UNITED, as observed on the current offering. To a lesser degree, aluminum pieces--Judd-324--were produced from the same die marriage. Perhaps a dozen examples of Judd-323 are believed extant in all grades.

    Physical Description.
The bright surfaces retain much original red color, highlighted by shades of crimson and gold. A bold strike adds to the overall eye appeal of this Gem. The PR65 Red and Brown grade is the highest currently awarded at either of the leading grading services (11/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Public Auction Sale (Hollinbeck, 7/1953), lot 1985; Thomas Bergin; June Sale (Stack's, 6/1984), lot 1174; Stuart C. Levine Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1986), lot 2272.
