    Description

    Marvelous 1864 Transitional Seated Dollar
Struck in Copper, Judd-397, PR66 Brown
    The Second Finest Certified

    1864 $1 Dollar, Judd-397, Pollock-465, Low R.7, PR66 Brown NGC.
Design. The obverse is the regular Seated Liberty design for 1864. The obverse die is apparently different from that used for the regular-issue 1864 proof silver dollars, which have the shield point entirely left of the serif of the 1. This pattern obverse has the shield point about over the left upright of the 1. The reverse is the With Motto Seated Liberty design introduced in 1866. Close examination reveals a raised die line from the N of IN to the G of GOD. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary. This is the first example of Judd-397 that has appeared in any of our auctions since 1993. Just under a dozen examples of this so-called "Transitional" pattern are known. Today, it is certain that Judd-397, along with others from this die pairing in silver (Judd-396), aluminum (Judd-398), and nickel (Judd-399), are restrikes produced in the late 1860s or early 1870s.

If the reverse die of this pattern can be matched to a regular-issue reverse die, a clue will be available that may help determine when these pieces were actually produced. The die line from N to G mentioned above may be a clue. There is also a stray letter beneath the G in GOD that looks like an E, but that feature appears to be common to all proof With Motto dollars. A review of proof Seated dollars in our Permanent Auction Archives shows the same die line only appearing on proof Seated dollars dated 1871.

Physical Description. This lovely Premium Gem proof has exceptional field-device contrast beneath the deep olive, steel blue, and tan patina. The fields are fully mirrored around frosty and sharply detailed devices. This piece is the second finest graded at NGC, surpassed numerically only by a single PR66 ★ Red Cameo example (11/08). The finest at PCGS are a handful of PR64s.

Provenance. Ex: Superior (2/1987), lot 1371.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
