Description

Unusual Copper-Tin-Zinc Alloy 1864 Cent
Judd-356, MS66 Red and Brown

1864 1C Indian Cent, Judd-356, Pollock-426, Low R.6, MS66 Red and Brown NGC. Struck from the dies for the regular issue 1864 No L Indian cent. Struck in a curious composition of 95% copper, 3% tin, and 2% zinc with a plain edge. Much experimentation was conducted on various alloys in 1864, and a great deal has still to be learned about these pieces, their composition, thickness, and weight. The surfaces are nearly flawless and the strike only lacks complete feather definition on the ends of the headdress. Rich cherry red mint luster is interspersed with deep blue color over each side. (NGC ID# 29GN, PCGS# 60526)
