1864 Indian Cent With 10% Tin Alloy
    Judd-356, Pollock-426, MS65

1864 1C Indian Cent, Judd-356, Pollock-426, Snow-PT1b, Low R.6, MS65 NGC. The Mint experimented with several different coinage alloys in 1864, and used the regular working dies for the cent denomination to strike the patterns. This specific piece was struck with the dies used to coin Snow-3 bronze No L business cents, but in an alloy of 90% copper and 10% tin. The 64 in the date are repunched. The portrait exhibits extensive die rust despite die lapping. The coin is unabraded and displays only trivial carbon.
