    Description

    Rare 1864 Indian Cent Copper-Aluminum Pattern, Judd-355

1864 1C One Cent, Judd-355, Pollock-425, R.6(?), MS64 PCGS. Obverse and reverse are both from the regular dies used to coin 1864 Indian cents, of the type not having James Longacre's "L" initial on the hair ribbon. Three different experimental alloys were used to create these pieces, all consisting of a combination of copper and aluminum, in differing ratios. This example displays a dark-yellowish-green color, with a few faint roller marks (as struck), and a modicum of scattered tiny flyspecks on each side of the coin. The features are sharply struck, with typical slight weakness on the upper feathertips of Liberty's headdress, and there are no apparent handling marks of any kind.
