Near-Gem Judd-356A 1864 Experimental Cent, Struck in Copper

1864 1C One Cent, Judd-356A, Pollock-427, Low R.6, MS64 Brown NGC. Both the obverse and the reverse resemble the 1864 No L business strike cent. This pattern was struck on bronze planchets whose thickness resembles that of the copper-nickel issues. This is part of a series of experimental alloys struck in 1864, and obverse die varieties exist. This particular piece appears to have undergone metallurgical analysis as the NGC insert states: 100% CU. This pattern is very rare with mint red color, and this piece certainly shows none. The surfaces are brown with an overlay of teal on each side. A few light contact marks are seen scattered across each side, which account for the grade. (NGC ID# 29GM, PCGS# 60525)
