    1864 No L Cent in Copper-Nickel
    Rare Judd-356B, Unc Details

1864 1C One Cent, Judd-356B, Pollock-426A, R.8--Improperly Cleaned--NGC. Unc Details. Struck from the 1864 No L dies but on a thinner planchet, as were the later bronze cents after 1864. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Numerous metallic compositions are known for 1864 cents, and all too few have undergone metallurgical examination to specifically determine the exact alloy used. The composition of this piece seems fairly obvious by observing the obverse. The otherwise red patina is interrupted by patches of gray-blue patina. The surfaces are bright from cleaning, but not overly so. The striking details are strong throughout, and each side displays pronounced die clashing.
