    1864 Motto Quarter in Silver
    Judd-386, PR66

1864 25C Seated Quarter, Judd-386, Pollock-454, Low R.7, PR66 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. The obverse is a regular dies trial striking, while the reverse has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle as adopted in 1866. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Often described as a "transitional" pattern, these were actually produced as restrikes during the late-1860s and into the 1870s, per USPatterns.com. About a dozen examples are known in silver. This is a fabulously toned Premium Gem with natural violet and cobalt-blue patina. The obverse is moderately contrasted.
