1864 'Transitional' Motto Half Dollar, Judd-392
    PR65 Red and Brown Cameo

1864 50C Half Dollar, Judd-392, Pollock-460, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown Cameo NGC. Struck from the regular obverse die, and paired with the regular reverse die of 1866 with the motto above the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Only a dozen or so pieces are known with this obverse/reverse combination. A similar number are known in silver, but only two or three examples are known in aluminum and nickel. These so-called "transitional" pieces are actually after-the-fact restrikes made well after 1866, possibly into the 1870s and sold to collectors in sets. The exceptionally deep mirrors on this piece are made possible by the presence of most of the original red luster. Just the faintest hint of blue is seen.
