Pattern 1864-L Cent, PR63 Red and Brown
Judd-357 Struck in Copper, Three or Four Known

1864-L 1C Judd-357, Pollock-Unlisted, R.8, PR63 Red and Brown NGC. Die 2. The regular dies for the 1864-L proof Indian cent were used to strike these extremely rare patterns, struck in copper with the edge device unknown. Die varieties exist. This PR63 Red and Brown NGC-certified example shows the date shifted right, 1 in date beneath the forward bust tip (rather than aligned with it) of Liberty, and a prominent raised die line runs along Liberty's jawline under the ear. The USPatterns.com website notes that this is the variety featured in Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia for the bronze 1864-L proof cents. The later (1722-1989) edition describes the obverse thusly:

"Obverse die is distinctive among the 18 or more known to have been used for 1864 L cents. Date is about centered, peak of 1 nearly even with bust point (unusual), left base of 1 above space between denticles, r. base of 4 above center of denticle. Spine slants down to left, above 1.5mm in length, from curl below ear into neck. Doubling on much of legend. Rev.: Spine to left from a round leaf tip at very top of r. branch."

All of the above diagnostics are visible on this piece; specifically, the die doubling appears most prominently at UNITED STAT, although it occurs throughout the legend. Much mint red remains on the surfaces of this piece, which is held back from a higher grade by a V-shaped scrape in the left obverse field below the D in UNITED. USPatterns.com opines that there were proof novodels created circa 1869-71 for inclusion in sets. A nice, problem-free example, far more red than brown, and certified in an NGC old-style "no-line fatty" holder. Census: 1
