    1864-L Pattern Cent, Judd-357, PR63 Red
Struck in Copper, Three or Four Known

1864-L 1C Judd-357, Pollock-Unlisted, R.8, PR63 Red NGC. Die 1. The regular dies for the 1864-L proof Indian cent were used to strike these extremely rare patterns, struck in copper with the edge device unknown. Die varieties exist. This PR63 Red example shows the date shifted left, with the forward bust point aligned with the tip of the 1 in the date.

NGC has certified four of these copper 1864-L proof pattern cents, PCGS none (3/14). We leave the Low R.8 rarity ranking because we are unsure that there are four separate examples. There are certainly three. We are offering, remarkably, two different examples in the present Platinum Night session, the present PR63 Red NGC piece and a PR63 Red and Brown NGC coin. The PR65 Brown NGC piece that we offered in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 5637, brought a strong $76,375.

The 1864-L cents struck in proof are great rarities in U.S. numismatics, avidly sought by the many collectors who specialize in Indian Head cents. The present Die 1 variety is apparently that used on the original proof strikes from 1864, and as such a coin of immense historical and numismatic importance. opines that the Die 2 varieties (see the PR63 Red and Brown NGC offering herein) were novodels, created a few years later. We note further than the reverse die of the present piece lacks the noticeable die spine on the reverse from the topmost leaf that is visible on the Die 2 example.

This is a great-looking orange-red example that would grade higher were it not for a single dark spot on the feathers above the B in LIBERTY, as elsewhere there are only a few scattered, insignificant flyspecks, and the color is well within the Red context throughout. This piece is certified in an NGC old-style "no-line fatty" holder. Census: 1 in 63 Red, 1 finer (3/14).
