1865 With Motto Dollar in Silver
Judd-434, PR65
Ex: Jimmy Hayes-Gardner

1865 $1 Motto Seated Dollar, Judd-434, Pollock-507, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. CAC. The obverse die features the standard Seated Liberty motif used on regular-issue dollars from 1865. The reverse die consists of the familiar perched eagle design also used on circulation strikes and proofs from 1865, with the addition of a scroll above the eagle's head with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Previously said to be a "transitional" issue, this die pairing was struck circa 1869 by the Mint for sale to collectors as part of backdated With Motto proof coinage that stretched back to 1863. The Teichman Photo File lists 15 specimens. This is a sharply struck piece that exhibits splendid golden-rose and lilac patina on each side. The surfaces are problem-free.
