Description

1865 Copper Quarter Eagle
Judd-439, PR64 Red and Brown

1865 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-439, Pollock-512, Low R.7, PR64 Red and Brown NGC. A dies trial piece from regular Liberty quarter eagle dies, struck in copper with a reeded edge. There is no logical reason for such an off-metal striking. USPatterns.com explains it: " ... it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete gold sets of this year containing the with motto half eagle, eagle, and double eagle." Nevertheless, an interesting piece. Deep cherry-red luster is seen over each side with occasional accents of deep blue. Nicely reflective fields and apparently carbon-free. (NGC ID# 45RH, PCGS# 70624)
