    Description

    Unique 1865 Judd-428A Quarter
    Struck in Copper and Silver

    1865 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-428A, Pollock-500, Unique--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Proof.
    Design.
From the regular dies for business strike 1865 Seated Liberty quarters, Briggs 1-A. The obverse has a Large 1 punched over a Small 1, and the reverse has a crack through the tops of TATE. Struck in copper and silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The Judd plate coin, and illustrated on page 83 of the seventh edition. The Pollock plate coin for the variety, illustrated as figure 203 in that reference. Traditionally described as Judd-424A, the variety was renumbered to Judd-428A in the eighth edition of the Judd reference. The obverse is entirely copper, while the reverse is a combination of copper and silver, as illustrated.

The planchet was a combination of silver and copper rolled together, with the intention to have the entire obverse show copper and the entire reverse show silver, as on Judd-407, a similar 1865 two cent pattern. Adams and Woodin wrote of the two cent piece that it is "said to have been struck from native Michigan ore" but they gave no source for their statement.

    Physical Description.
A satiny and sharply detailed obverse exhibits a blend of pale green and gold toning with faint traces of orange mint color. The reverse is mostly bright silver with satiny luster, and partly faded orange copper that shows hairlines from cleaning. These minor distractions hardly detract from the importance of this pattern, unique per all of the usual references.

    Provenance.
    Ex: Auction '83 (Stack's, 7/1983), lot 645; Auction '86 (Paramount, 7/1986), lot 1801; Stack's private treaty.
