Description

1865 Three Cent Nickel in Copper
Judd-413, PR65 Red Ultra Cameo

1865 3C Three Cent Nickel, Judd-413, Pollock-484, R.6-7, PR65 Red Ultra Cameo NGC. From regular issue dies, but struck in copper with a plain edge. These pieces are now believed to have been deliberately struck by the Mint for sale to collectors. More than a dozen examples are known, and pieces were also produced in oroide and aluminum. Two different obverse dies were used to strike the copper pieces, according to examination of several pieces by Heritage cataloger, Brian Koller. This example is from the more frequently seen die that shows prominent repunching on the digits in the date. Each side is full red and undimmed by the passage of the years. Strong cameo contrast is evident between the mirrored fields and thickly frosted devices.
