Description

Rare 1865 Three Cent Silver Pattern in Copper
    Judd-415, PR65 Red and Brown

    1865 3C Three Cent Silver, Judd-415, Pollock-487, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
Both obverse and reverse dies are the same design used for regular-issue coinage in 1865. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
The issue was allegedly struck to test the dies that were used for regular coinage in 1865. USPatterns.com believes that the issue was created to be sold as part of the off-metal pattern sets that were so popular with collectors. Experts estimate that fewer than a dozen specimens are extant.

    Physical Description.
Gunmetal-blue and red accent both sides of this well-preserved specimen. A lintmark near the date provides a pedigree marker. NGC Census: One in PR65 Red and Brown, the finest of the three pieces certified by this service. PCGS Population: Four coins total, the finest of which is a PR65 Brown (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: advertisement (Robert Hughes, 7/1977); 50th Anniversary Sale (Kagin's, 5/1978), lot 1275; 1998 ANA (Heritage, 8/1998), lot 5074; Stack's private treaty transaction.
