    1865 Five Dollar in Copper
    Judd-446, PR66 Brown

1865 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-446, Pollock-518, High R.6, PR66 Brown NGC. The obverse die is the regular design for the year. The reverse is the design adopted in 1866, with the scroll over the eagle's head and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This transitional dies trial may have been struck in 1865, but it also may have been struck later with other With Motto restrikes. As pointed out on the website, "The first definite appearance of this design was in the April 1870 auction by John Haseltine of coins from the Idler collection." Although labeled Brown, there is significant underlying mint red on each side. The brightness in the fields further enhances this underlying color. Problem-free.
Ex: T. Henry Allen Collection (Stack's, 2/1977), lot 1140; Queller Family Collection, Part Two / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1647.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
