1865 'Transitional' Half Dollar, PR66
Judd-429, Struck in Silver
1865 50C Half Dollar, Judd-429, Pollock-502, Low R.7, PR66
NGC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The obverse is struck from
the regular-issue Seated Liberty half dollar die, but the reverse
shows a scroll with motto IN GOD WE TRUST, as adopted in 1866.
Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Although these are often
called "transitional" pieces, there was no transition involved, as
they were struck well after the 1866 Motto silver coins debuted --
possibly as late as the early 1870s. The Breen Proof
Encyclopedia notes that seven three-piece sets [quarter, half,
dollar] were thought to have been made, but USPatterns.com
estimates that about a dozen are known of the Judd-429. This is an
extremely attractive Premium Gem proof with light pinkish-gold
toning and much contrast between reflective fields and frosted
devices. The Lemus-Queller Collection (Heritage, 1/2009) was
particularly strong in the so-called "transitional" patterns of
1863 and later, having an example each of the 1865-dated silver,
copper, and (unique) aluminum versions of these, Judd-429 through
431.Ex: Abe Kosoff, 8/16/1971; Harry W. Bass Research Foundation. Accompanied by an inventory tag showing provenance. HBCC-6056 (Bass Sylloge number).
