Gem 1865 Shield Nickel Pattern, Finest Graded by NGC1865 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-416, Pollock-488, R.6-7, PR66 NGC. Nearly identical to the regular issue proof 1866 Rays Shield Nickel, except the date is 1865 and the reverse center has a small dot, apparently the result of laying out the design using a compass. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Sharply struck and well preserved with faint golden-brown color. Most of the stars are lightly repunched. A perfect adjunct to a proof Shield Nickel collection, and likely as rare as the famous 1867 Rays proof. Of the six Judd-416 specimens that NGC has certified, this is the single finest graded.
