1865 Shield Nickel in Copper
Judd-417, PR64 Red and Brown

1865 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-417, Pollock-489, R.7, PR64 Red and Brown NGC. A prototype issue for the Shield nickel, struck from the same dies as the proofs of 1866 with plain center dot. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Saul Teichman reports at USPatterns.com his belief that both originals (i.e. true prototypes) and restrikes exist. A colorful coating of rose-violet and mint-green iridescent toning accompanies nicely mirrored surfaces. NGC Census: 1 in 64 Red and Brown, 1 finer (12/25).
Ex: The Western Hills Collection/Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2005), lot 7382.
