Description

    Attractive 1865 Gold Dollar
    Struck in Copper
    Judd-438, PR62 Brown

    1865 G$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-438, Pollock-511, Low R.7, PR62 Brown NGC.
    Design.
Both obverse and reverse dies are the design adopted for use on regular-issue gold dollar coinage in 1865. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Classified as a die trial issue by many researchers, Judd-438 is more likely a numismatic delicacy, coined for sale to collectors circa 1870. There are approximately one dozen examples extant, with one specimen impounded in the Connecticut State Library and another in the ANS Collection. Auction appearances are uncommon, so this specimen represents an important opportunity for the advanced collector.

    Physical Description.
The obverse is sharp and well detailed. The reverse shows some softness on the bow and wreath. The surfaces are deeply toned with mottled yellow-green on the obverse and even light blue patina over the reverse. NGC and PCGS combined have graded only three coins finer in the Brown category (11/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Auction '85 (Stack's, 7/1985), lot 902.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29JN, PCGS# 60623)

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
