Description
1865 Ten-Dollar, Judd-450, R.7, PR 64 Red and Brown. A "transitional" pattern that was struck from the regular obverse die and paired with the 1866 reverse die with the motto above the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Quite a lovely coin, the original red surfaces are somewhat muted with the presence of an iridescent purple, blue, and pale olive patina in the fields. Surely one of the finest survivors of this limited pattern issue. Purchased by David Faraday from Julian Leidman in San Francisco on September 23, 1972 for $425.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29JV, PCGS# 70637, GSID# 12733)
