    1866 'Three Dollar,' MS67 NGC
    Judd-C1866-1, Merriam Fantasy

1866 $3 Merriam Fantasy "Three Dollar" MS67 NGC. Judd-C1866-1, Pollock-5080, Cunningham-15-740X. The obverse depicts Lincoln facing right, with GOD AND OUR COUNTRY above, and the date below. A star at the top of the reverse joins the two wreath branches that enclose a Roman numeral III. Struck in gold with a reeded edge. This is an important piece related to the 1868-dated example that realized $6,600 in our FUN sale in January, and this example is a point finer compared to that MS66 NGC piece. Both sides are fully lustrous with frosty lemon-yellow surfaces and excellent design definition.

The pre-sale publicity was more than I imagined, and the actual catalog better than I had expected - and my expectations were high!
