    1866 Three Dollar Private Pattern in Brass
    Judd-C-1866-7, MS63

    1866 $3 Three Dollar, Brass, Reeded Edge, Judd-C1866-7, MS63 PCGS. Private pattern, struck by Merriam, of a bearded bust of Lincoln, facing right, GOD AND COUNTRY around the upper obverse rim, the date below. The reverse depicts an ornate wreath with a six-sided star at the top, Roman numeral III in the center. Struck in brass with a reeded edge, medallic turn. Examples are also known in gold, silver, and copper. The brown surfaces display deeper gray patina on each side. An unusual and rare private-issue pattern.
