1866 Five Cents in Nickel
Judd-461, PR64 Cameo, CAC

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-461, Pollock-535, R.5, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. A bust of George Washington faces right on the obverse, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds, and the date is below. The reverse features the denomination 5 CENTS within a laurel wreath with IN GOD WE TRUST above. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Many collectors sought Washington portrait coins and related items in the 1860s. In response, the Mint produced a number of pattern coins, not as samples for proposed coin designs, but for sale to those collectors. This popular design is relatively available today, due to considerable production 160 years ago. Delicate gold toning visits the mirrored fields and lustrous devices of this Choice Cameo proof. Trivial lint marks and contact marks limit the grade of this lovely example. PCGS Population: 3 in 64 Cameo, 5 finer (3/26).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29K7, PCGS# 860656, Greysheet# 373821)
