Description

R.7 1866 Washington Head
Five Cent Pattern in Copper
Judd-468, PR63 Red

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-468, Pollock-561, R.7, PR63 Red PCGS. The obverse bears a bust of a pigtailed George Washington facing right, with IN GOD WE TRUST over his head at the rim. The reverse is a tall 5 in a wreath (olive or laurel, with berries) joined by a bowknot, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. There is no denominator. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The Judd pattern reference lists the copper issue as R.8, but www.USPatterns.com lumps the "copper and/or bronze" Judd-468 and 469 patterns together, saying "about a half-dozen known" and giving an R.7 listing.
This piece is fully Red within the context of early copper, with attractive pinkish-orange coloration on both sides and splendid luster. PCGS lists only three examples: PR63 Red (this coin), PR64 Red, and PR63 Brown (8/08).

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 80664, GSID# 12861)
