    High-End Washington Five Cent
    Pattern Struck in Bronze
    Judd-469, PR64 Red and Brown

    1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-469, Pollock-561, Low R.7, PR64 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
The obverse showcases the popular bust of Washington facing right, with IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date below. The reverse shows a tall 5 centered in a rather sparse laurel wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in bronze with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
This example represents one of the many Washington five cent patterns of 1866. Washingtonia was a very popular numismatic specialty in the mid-19th century. Robert Coulton Davis listed this pattern as number 217 in his seminal work on patterns in The Coin Collector's Journal.

    Physical Description.
Sharply struck, with extraordinary detail on the hair. Attractive, original red luster remains with traces of lilac in the fields. Very challenging at the near-Gem level. This piece is tied for the finest graded by NGC (11/08). PCGS has graded two specimens at this level, with one PR65 Brown finer.

    Provenance.
Ex: 306th Sale (Kagin, 4/1975), lot 8; Fall Sale (Paramount, 10/1986), lot 389.
