Description

1866 Judd-473 Pattern Five Cent, PR64
Popular Washington Design

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-473, Pollock-564, R.6, PR64 NGC. A portrait of Washington faces right on the obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date below. The reverse features the With Rays shield nickel design adopted in 1866. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

Washingtonia was one of the most popular areas of American numismatics during the middle part of the 19th century. This popularity is reflected in the number of Washington patterns created for the new five cent coin in 1866. Including off-metal issues, 40 different patterns were produced. The coin is fully struck, with crisp detail on all device elements. The pale golden-rose surfaces have granular qualities often seen on this issue due to the hardness of the nickel planchets. Census: 1 in 64, 1 finer (2/25).
Ex: Stack's (privately before 2009); The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1656.
