1866 Washington Head Nickel in Nickel
    Judd-473, PR66 Cameo

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-473, Pollock-564, R.6, PR66 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg-Simpson. The Washington Head motif, the president facing the viewer's right, with IN GOD WE TRUST above and a tiny date 1866 near the bust truncation, with the last 6 noticeably larger and higher. The reverse employs the normal With Rays Shield nickel reverse of 1866 (as evidence, we point to the tiny centering point and repunching on the left side of the 5 known from the regular proof reverse). Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The fields are bright and surprisingly reflective for an early nickel product and the devices are well-frosted, giving the coin its cameo effect. Light, even golden toning is seen over each side.
Ex: Wilcox Collection (Chapman Brothers, 11/1901), lot 873; to J.M. Clapp; Clapp Estate, 1942, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 10/1996), lot 166.
