    Description

1866 Lincoln Five Cents in Nickel
    Judd-486, PR64

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-486, Pollock-575, Low R.7, PR64 PCGS. A bust of President Abraham Lincoln faces right, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top of the obverse and the date below. The reverse shows an open olive or laurel wreath with IN GOD WE TRUST in tiny letters at the top and a tall 5 / CENTS in the center ("Tall 5 reverse"). Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Examples were also struck in copper. There are only eight nickel pieces known and all have some pedigree information. The surfaces on this piece are expectantly bright but only moderately reflective in the fields. Light patina is seen over each side. Identifiable by a small spot above the D in UNITED.
Ex: Fairfield Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1977); Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 2/2000), lot 817.
