1866 Shield Nickel in Copper
Judd-490, PR67+ Brown

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-490, Pollock-578, Low R.7, PR67+ Brown PCGS. Ex: Simpson. Shield design obverse, similar to that adopted, but with a smaller motto and date divided at the base of the shield. Knobbed or "Dutch" 5 inside a laurel wreath on the reverse. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Eye appeal is simply outstanding for this richly toned Superb Gem with pristine glossy brown surfaces. Both sides showcase gorgeous ice-blue patina. These distinctive and rare Shield nickel patterns with the "Dutch" 5 reverse were struck in nickel and copper, with about a dozen of each type known, according to USPatterns.com.
