    1866 Shield Nickel Pattern PR66, Judd-489

1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-489, Pollock-577, R.6, PR66 PCGS. 77.47 grains. The obverse has a shield design similar to that adopted for the regular issue Shield nickel, except that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in smaller letters and the date is divided by the ball at the base of the shield. On the reverse, the numeral 5 is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Hints of lilac and golden patina rest atop mirrored surfaces, with trivial flyspecks noticed about the obverse periphery. Judd-489 has two weight standards, with thin (54 to 55 grains) and thick (74 to 79 grains) planchets. This is the thick planchet variety. Population: 4 in 66 for both planchet types, none finer (10/03).(#60685) (NGC ID# 29KT, PCGS# 60685)
