Description
High-End 1866 Shield Nickel Pattern
Judd-490, PR66 Brown
1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-490, Pollock-578, Low R.7, PR66
Brown NGC. Design. Obverse similar to the adopted design. Heraldic shield with arrows, topped by a cross, with laurel clusters down both sides. The shield is low in the field, and the date is divided by the ball of the shield. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above the shield, in small letters. The reverse shows a Knobbed or "Dutch" 5 centered in a laurel wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Struck in copper with a plain edge.
Commentary. The issue has been widely collected since Robert Coulton Davis first described it in The Coin Collector's Journal in 1885 (Davis 225). Collectors recognized the combination of rarity and affordability represented by the coin early on. Specimens are known on both thick planchets (71 grains) and thin planchets (55 grains). This example is a thin planchet, weighing in at 55.2 grains. Hobbyist Lou Butterfield discovered an interesting cutting error on the obverse die. The remains of a letter T can be seen in the field, to the right of the motto. The second laurel leaf points to the base of the partially effaced T. Saul Teichman believes that the engraver initially positioned the motto too far to the right on the die. The error was noticed and corrected, leaving the telltale letter as a remnant (see USPatterns.com for photograph and discussion).
Physical Description. The coin features a remarkably strong strike, with all details of the design elements fully brought up. The fields are fully reflective, under attractive shades of cerulean-blue and an accent of red-violet. The surfaces are free of distractions and complement the crisp detail of the devices. Fantastic eye appeal. NGC Census: 2 in PR66 Brown, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR65 Red and Brown; none finer (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Crouch Collection (Superior, 6/1977), lot 195; Hoffman Collection (Melnick, 11/1982), lot 42.
