Description

1866 Shield Nickel in Copper
Judd-495, PR64 Brown
Only CACG Slabbed

1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-495, Pollock-582, High R.7, PR64 Brown CACG. The obverse is similar to the issued Shield nickel, but the ball at the base of the shield divides the date into 18 66, and IN GOD WE TRUST has small letters. The reverse shows a short numeral 5, centered in a thick laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Saul Teichman's photo roster lists seven pieces, including one in the Connecticut State Library, but the current piece does not plate match any of them. This example displays deep olive-bronze luster and notes of golden toning. A pair of small specks beneath the right arrowhead serve as pedigree markers.

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29KW, PCGS# 60691, Greysheet# 12910)
