Description

1866 No Rays Shield Nickel Pattern
Gem Proof, Judd-507

1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.5, PR65 PCGS. A transitional pattern that lacks the rays found on non-pattern 1866 Shield nickels. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The reverse differs slightly from 1867 No Rays business strikes, since a star points to the center of the first A in AMERICA, rather than between AM. However, some 1867 proofs were struck from this reverse subtype. This fully struck Gem has flashy fields and attractive toning. The obverse is golden-brown, and the reverse displays peach, power-blue, and rose shades.
