Popular 1866 Shield Nickel Pattern in Copper, Judd-508
1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-508, Pollock-592, High R.6, PR66 Brown NGC. Struck from a regular obverse die 1866 Shield Nickel, while the reverse prototypes the No Rays design that was produced for circulation the following year. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The ball of the prominent 5 is die doubled. The deep chocolate-brown patina is consistent and attractive, and the preservation is seemingly unimprovable. The present Gem is the single finest certified by either major service. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified a Red example of Judd-508.
