Description
Scarcer 1866 Shield Nickel Pattern, Judd-509
1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-509, Pollock-592, R.6, PR53 PCGS. The obverse is the same as that used to coin regular issue 1866 five-cent pieces. The reverse design is the same as that used for regular issue Shield nickels after 1866, without rays. Struck from copper and bronze, with a plain edge. The current offering has non-reflective red-brown surfaces, with a number of small to moderate handling marks on the reverse, and a few minor contact marks on the obverse. Dark patina clings to some of the devices, and light wear seems to be present on some of the central highpoints.
