(1866) With Rays Shield Nickel Reverse Die Trial
    Judd-A1866-9 in White Metal, MS64

1866 5C Shield Nickel Reverse Die Trial, Judd-A1866-9, Pollock-3269, R.8, MS64 PCGS. Uniface die trial of the regular Shield nickel With Rays reverse. Struck in white metal with a unknown edge. The obverse exhibits an impression of the normal With Rays reverse. The outer areas of the oversize planchet are planned off with myriad striations. A circular cross-hatch pattern appears at the central reverse, while the borders are similar to the outer areas on the other side. Bright silver-gray with a defect at 7 o'clock on the reverse. This is one of two Pollock-3269 coins known. It is the only example struck on an oversized planchet, and the only J-A1866-9 trial in private hands. The other, struck on a normal planchet, is in the Library Company of Philadelphia collection.
