Description

1866 Washington Nickel in Copper
Judd-462, PR63 Red and Brown
Challenging Off-Metal Pattern

1866 5C Washington Five Cents, Judd-462, Pollock-536, Baker-45B, GW-772, Low R.7, PR63 Red and Brown NGC. A five cent pattern featuring George Washington in profile, facing right, on the obverse. The date has minute digits. The reverse has the 5 of the denomination central on that side, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Saul Teichman knows of nine specimens of this rare pattern. The fully struck surfaces are lavender-brown with generous remnants of the initial peach-gold color. Both sides are unmarked but exhibit scattered tiny aqua flecks, most evident on the reverse border near 9:30. In its Bowers and Merena auction appearance, the present piece tipped the scales at 71.9 grains, notably heavier than the customary 58 to 59 grains for Judd-462.
