Comely 1867 Copper Seated Dollar
1867 $1 Dollar, Judd-592, Pollock-656, Low R.7, PR62 Brown
Judd-592, PR62 Brown
Design. Struck from the regular issue dies for the 1867 With Motto Seated Liberty dollar. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Commentary. Probably between six and 12 examples are known, based on current auction records. The number of appearances in recent auctions suggests that the number of survivors is close to the top of the range, perhaps 10 to 12 pieces. The reverse die has a distinctive die line in the ribbon, beginning at the upper edge above the right top of the N of IN and ending at the lower edge below the D in GOD, that appears on the reverse of regular-issue proof dollars from 1866 to at least 1870.
Physical Description. Olive-brown surfaces exhibit mildly reflective proof mirrors with some splashes of light copper that suggest this piece may have been cleaned and retoned. The surfaces have faint hairlines, tiny contact marks, and traces of corrosion on the reverse. NGC Census: 1 in PR62, 9 finer. PCGS Population: None in PR62, 4 finer (12/08).
Provenance. New Millennium Collection; Heritage (11/2003), lot 11077 as PR63 Brown PCGS.
