Description

1867 Half Eagle in Silver
Judd-601a, XF Details
Only Two Known

1867 $5 Half Eagle, Judd-601a, Pollock-663, R.8 -- Rim Damage -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, XF Details. The obverse is similar to the issued three cent nickel, except Liberty has a star on her coronet, and the bust is smaller. The reverse is identical to the issued Motto Liberty half eagle. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Also issued in nickel (Judd-601), and both patterns are extremely rare with only two known each. They believed to have been privately struck from U.S. Mint dies sold as scrap metal, possibly by Joseph Mickley or Sylvester S. Crosby. The present lot is the first appearance of Judd-601a in a Heritage auction. It appears to have circulated, as a finder made light, narrow cuts on the obverse rim from 8 to 9 o'clock in the hope of revealing a gold interior. The fields display tobacco-brown toning with glimpses of environmental damage. The high points are pearl-white.
Ex: Tampa Bay Rarities (Bowers and Merena, 1/2011), lot 1270.
