Description

1867 Nickel in Silver
Judd-583, PR55
Likely Unique

1867 5C Five Cent Piece, Judd-583, Pollock-643, R.8, PR55 PCGS. The obverse is similar to the regular-issue three cent nickel, except the coronet displays a star. The reverse is the same as the issued 1867 No Rays nickel. Struck in silver with a plain edge. The muled design is unique in silver, and only two or three are known in copper. Judd-583 is believed to have been struck outside of the Mint during the 19th century. Celebrated early American numismatist Joseph Mickley reportedly acquired the dies when they were sold as scrap by the Mint. Liberty's hair shows a hint of wear, presumably from brief service as a pocket piece. Both sides display dappled golden-brown and cream-gray toning. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green-label holder.
