Description

1867 Five Cent Longacre Pattern in Aluminum
Judd-561, PR64

1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-561, Pollock-622, R.5, PR64 PCGS. The central obverse device is a head of Liberty facing left, wearing a headdress of four large feathers and a ribbon with the inscription UNION AND LIBERTY. Resting in the hair in front of the ribbon are four large stars. The Chief Engraver's name LONGACRE F. is stylishly displayed at the truncation of the neck. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with the date in the exergue. The reverse features a Roman numeral V over an ornate shield, with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This unusual design was struck in copper and aluminum with both plain and reeded edges. USPatterns.com notes that 100 pieces of Judd-561 are believed to have been struck, according to J. Colvin Randall. This would make the Judd-561 one of the more obtainable aluminum patterns and an excellent entry point for the collector interested in these unusual patterns. Housed in a first-generation holder.
